What is the difference between massage and chiropractic?

Massage Therapy Session

Massage and chiropractic care are very different treatments but share a few similarities in the purpose of seeking care. Both treatments are effective at preventing some illnesses and pain as well as aiding in the healing process of illnesses and pain.

The History Of Massage And Chiropractic Care

Both massage therapy and chiropractic treatment have roots in ancient Chinese culture. Massage therapy has been found in ancient artwork and writings from as far back as 2330 BC in Egypt and is thought to have been a common medical treatment in China from 722 to 481 BC. Chiropractic care also dates back to ancient China and Greece.

Hippocrates, a Greek physician who lived from 460 to 357 BC documented both treatments in his writings. It's widely thought that he was discussing the benefits of massage therapy when he wrote "The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing" and of chiropractic, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases."

The Similarities And Differences Of Massage Therapy & Spinal Manipulation

Both treatments promote the body's ability to heal itself without medication or surgery and are considered holistic care, but in practice they are very different.

Though there are many different styles of massage therapy, the basic practice is the manipulation of soft tissues to provide improved circulation, flexibility, relaxation, stimulate the nervous system and enhance tissue healing. The massage therapist can use different techniques such as long strokes, deep tissue massage or pressure point massage to provide relief to sore muscles.

While the basis of massage therapy deals with soft tissue, the primary goal of chiropractic care is neuroskeletal care. Chiropractors generally use spinal manipulation to move bones into proper alignment. By manually applying force or pressure to joints, they are able to adjust bones and joints into proper alignment.

Choosing Which Treatment Is Best For Your Condition

If your primary issue is muscle pain or stiffness, then massage therapy is your best bet for relief. By massaging muscles and connective tissues, massage therapists are able to move lymphatic fluids, increase circulation to the affected area, and relieve the buildup of lactic acid that often causes muscle spasms and pain.

Chiropractic care may be a better choice if you have a slipped disc in your back, a pinched sciatic nerve, or if your joints ache. Having a professional identify the cause of your pain, whether it is muscular or skeletal will help in choosing the correct course of treatment.

Both massage therapy and chiropractic care can be a useful preventative measure to avoid the aches and pains that come from everyday life and can boost your body's immunity to fight off illness and disease. - See more at: http://www.greenbamboomassage.com/blog/what-is-the-difference-between-massage-and-chiropractic#sthash.FpMgx6o2.dpuf
